Dong Thap: 206th Commemoration of Do Cong Tuong and His Wife Fully Prepared

(DTO) For generations, on the 8th, 9th, and 10th days of the sixth lunar month, local residents, market vendors, and tourists have gathered at the temple dedicated to Do Cong Tuong and his wife in Cao Lanh Ward, Dong Thap Province, to offer incense in remembrance of the two pioneers who reclaimed land, established a market, and devoted themselves to improving the lives of local people. 

The 206th anniversary celebration promises a vibrant blend of cultural and spiritual activities, featuring several new attractions that will help showcase the rich heritage of Cao Lanh. 

According to Ho Hue Thu Hang, Vice Chairwoman of the People’s Committee of Cao Lanh Ward, this year’s death anniversary will be held on a large scale, with cultural, artistic, sporting, and tourism events taking place throughout the three-day festival. 

One of the highlights will be a cultural space recreating the historic Vuon Quyt Market and Hoa An Village. Visitors can also explore displays of OCOP-certified products and local specialties from communes and wards across the province, along with food stalls serving authentic Mekong Delta cuisine. 

As night falls, a floating lantern festival will illuminate the Cao Lanh River near Hai Ba Trung Park, creating a warm atmosphere. An artistic program titled “Paying Tribute to Our Forebears,” featuring projection mapping and a fireworks display, is expected to be one of this year’s standout attractions. 

The festival will also include live performances, the 3rd Do Cong Tuong Lion-Dragon Dance Cup, traditional sports competitions, a Chinese chess tournament, health exercise for older adults, and a variety of community-based cultural activities. 

For many people in the Mekong Delta, especially market vendors, the event is more than a religious observance. It is a cherished cultural tradition that has been preserved for generations. 

Every year, people come to offer incense, pray for prosperity in business and peace for their families, and express their gratitude to the two pioneers who dedicated their lives to the well-being of the community. 

According to the organizing committee, the 205th commemoration welcomed more than 230,000 visitors. With even larger crowds expected this year, local authorities have nearly completed preparations, including security, environmental sanitation, traffic management, medical services, parking areas, and reception arrangements for visitors. 

Mr. Do Cong Tuong and his wife are remembered for reclaiming land, establishing a market, and devoting themselves to the welfare of local people. During their lifetime, Do Cong Tuong and his wife played a vital role in reclaiming undeveloped land and supporting people during the early days of the region’s development. Therefore, their lasting contributions have earned them the deep respect and gratitude of generations of Cao Lãnh residents. In appreciation of their legacy, local people built a temple in their honor, commonly known as the Temple of the Market Founders. After several restorations, the tomb and temple of Do Cong Tuong and his wife was recognized as a National Historical and Cultural Relic Site in 2019. It has also received UNESCO Center’s Gold Plaque as one of the Top 100 Outstanding Cultural and Spiritual Tourism Destinations
