Dong Thap - A Land of Sweet Fruits Reaching Far Beyond

(DTO) In the first days of June, as fruit orchards enter the harvest season, Dong Thap is hosting its first-ever Fruit Festival under the theme “Dong Thap - A Land of Sweet Fruits.” Viewed from a social perspective, it is a cultural, tourism, and trade event aimed at promoting local specialties. More fundamentally, however, the festival conveys a message that reflects the province’s vision and aspirations for a new stage of development on its journey from agricultural production to an agricultural economy.

Over the years, Dong Thap has been recognized as one of Vietnam’s leading localities in agricultural innovation. From the establishment of Farmers’ Clubs, the development of planting area codes, and the promotion of new-generation cooperatives to advancing digital transformation in agricultural production and consumption, the province has consistently pursued the goal of increasing added value rather than simply maximizing output.

For this reason, the Dong Thap Fruit Festival is more than a promotional event or a tourism stimulus program. It represents the next step in a long-term strategy to build a strong fruit industry brand, while shaping the image of a dynamic, modern region capable of connecting deeply with both domestic and international markets.

For many years, Dong Thap was best known for its vast rice fields, export-oriented pangasius farming, and vibrant lotus seasons. Yet following administrative consolidation and agricultural restructuring, Dong Thap today is also home to an extensive fruit-growing region, encompassing hundreds of thousands of hectares of farmland and a wide variety of fruits that have secured a place in the marketplace.

These include fruit-laden mango trees, durian orchards known for the distinctive flavor imparted by the fertile soil, and year-round flourishing longan, jackfruit, and guava orchards. They are not only the result of farmers’ hard work but also the product of a transformation in production thinking, the application of science and technology, and the reorganization of agricultural sectors in a more professional manner.

While agricultural products were once sold primarily as raw commodities, today the focus is on building brands, ensuring traceability, meeting market standards, and integrating more deeply into global value chains.

To achieve this, a locality needs not only large production zones but also a comprehensive ecosystem of connections.

The Dong Thap Fruit Festival provides exactly such a platform. Additionally, it features cultural, tourism, and culinary spaces that tell the story of the people and the land behind each abundant harvest.

Notably, the festival is not solely focused on economic goals. Through its many activities, Dong Thap is conveying a broader message: agricultural development is not just about products but also about culture, identity, and people.

In an era of global integration, a locality’s competitiveness is determined not only by what it produces but also by the unique values that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

A delicious fruit can be grown in many places, but the story of the land, the farmers, the rural culture, and the warm-hearted spirit of Dong Thap’s people is what truly creates distinction. This reflects the province’s strategic direction in its new phase of development: agriculture as the foundation, added value as the driving force, branding as the leverage, and people as the center.

Fruitful harvests will continue to flourish across the fertile regions, but Dong Thap’s vision extends beyond bumper crops. The province aims to build a modern, green, and sustainable agricultural sector; to bring local specialties to broader markets; to transform potential into competitive advantage, and competitive advantage into a powerful engine for development.

Therefore, “Dong Thap - A Land of Sweet Fruits” is more than the theme of a festival. It is the aspiration of a region confidently stepping onto larger markets through values nurtured by alluvial soil, innovative thinking, and the unwavering determination of the Dong Thap  people to keep moving forward.
