Dong Thap Economy Sees Positive Changes During 2021-2026 Period
(DTO) On the afternoon of August 27, the Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee hosted a conference to review the province's 2026 Economic Census. The event was connected online to commune-level venues. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dieu, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and Head of the 2026 Dong Thap Economic Census Steering Committee, chaired the conference.
According to preliminary results, the 2026 Economic Census recorded more than 218,000 survey units across the province. Of these, individual business households accounted for more than 94%, while enterprises and cooperatives accounted for nearly 5%. By economic sector, the service industry held the largest share, at nearly 90% of the total.
During the 2020-2025 period, the province's corporate sector recorded strong development. The number of enterprises increased by more than 36%, employing more than 280,000 workers. Total net revenue soared by more than 90%, exceeding VND 604 trillion.
A notable feature of this year's census was the intensified use of information technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital maps throughout the process, significantly shortening fieldwork time.
The preliminary results were completed on schedule and accepted by central authorities, who assessed their quality as good. The official report, together with in-depth analyses, is expected to be released in December 2026.
The preliminary results show that Dong Thap's economy during the 2021-2026 period underwent positive changes in terms of scale, structure, and growth quality. This is an important dataset reflecting the current state, recovery, development, and transformation of the local economy.
In his keynote speech, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Dieu acknowledged and commended the sense of responsibility demonstrated by steering committees at all levels, enumerators, supervisors, departments, agencies, and localities throughout the implementation of the census.
He stressed that statistical data must be accurate, complete, standardized, and timely, as it serves as a critical foundation for leadership, governance, and policymaking. Localities should proactively leverage the Economic Census results to accurately assess economic conditions in their areas, while continuing to review and update volatile business establishments to gradually build and optimize a unified database among statistics, tax, and state management authorities.
The provincial leader asked the Statistics sector to continue guiding departments, agencies, and localities in improving the quality of statistical work, data synthesis, analysis, and reporting, ensuring that figures accurately reflect the capacity, potential, and level of socio-economic development of each locality and the province as a whole.
According to Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Dieu, the results of the 2026 Economic Census constitute a foundational data source for assessing, analyzing, and formulating the province's socio-economic development blueprints and master plans for the next period. Effective use of this data will help improve the quality of leadership and administration, create a basis for attracting investment, and promote socio-economic growth and social security.
On this occasion, the Organizing Committee announced commendation decisions from the Ministry of Finance, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, and the Chief of Provincial Statistics for collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in implementing the 2026 Economic Census.
