Dong Thap: Promoting the Role of Border Guard in Party and Local Government Building in Border Areas
(DTO) On the afternoon of April 13, the Dong Thap Provincial Border Guard Command held a conference to review and draw lessons from the operations of local military organizations under the two-tier local government model.
Attending the conference were Major General Do Ngoc Canh, Director of the Border Guard Department for Drug and Crime Prevention; Vice Chairman of the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Dieu; along with leaders of departments, sectors, and border localities.

According to assessments at the conference, following the organizational restructuring, the provincial Border Guard forces quickly consolidated their organizational structure and staffing, effectively carried out political and ideological education, and maintained overall stability. Border guard duties have been implemented without interruption, contributing to maintaining stable security and order in Dong Thap’s border areas.
In particular, the provincial Border Guard has effectively managed and protected national borders; strictly maintained combat readiness; advised the Dong Thap Provincial People’s Committee on handling border-related issues; and actively combated illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.
The force has also effectively played its core and leading role, coordinating with other forces to combat and strictly handle legal violations in border areas, thereby contributing significantly to law enforcement and maintaining local stability.
In addition, coordination with the Public Security forces has been strengthened through increased patrols, area and subject management, information sharing, and crackdowns on social evils and various crimes, especially drug-related offenses, smuggling, and illegal transportation and storage of banned goods, helping to ensure security and order in border areas.

In his directive remarks at the conference, Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Dieu requested the provincial Border Guard to effectively implement the 21 tasks assigned by the Ministry of National Defense.
He emphasized that under all circumstances, the Border Guard must continue to affirm and promote its role as the core, leading, and specialized force in managing and safeguarding national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and border security. The force should maintain close and direct coordination with departments, agencies, and border localities to proactively advise the Party Committee, the Border Guard High Command, the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People’s Committee, and the Provincial Military Command in effectively handling situations, ensuring no passivity or surprises.
At the same time, the Border Guard, together with local military forces, must effectively carry out military and defense tasks and continue strengthening defense zones.
The Vice Chairman also requested the provincial Border Guard to further strengthen and consolidate the grassroots political system; promote its role in participating in Party and local government building in border areas; enhance the effectiveness of ongoing models, movements, and programs; and improve people’s livelihoods while effectively implementing sustainable poverty reduction in border regions.
