Dong Thap: Saltwater Intrusion To Rise With Mid-Second Lunar Month High Tide

Wednesday, 01/04/2026, 10:07 (GMT+7)

(DTO) Saltwater intrusion in Dong Thap province is forecast to increase in the coming days due to the mid-second lunar month tidal surge, according to the Dong Thap Provincial Hydro-Meteorological Station.

Water sources for production in the Go Cong freshwater zone remain plentiful.

According to the station, upstream flows on the Tien River are currently changing slowly. At Tan Chau Station on the Tien River, water levels are about 15–20 percent higher than the multi-year average.

Meanwhile, tidal levels in the lower Tien River are rising with the mid-second lunar month tides and are expected to peak from April 4 to 5.

Over the next three days (through April 3), salinity levels at monitoring stations along the Tien River are expected to gradually increase. From April 4 to 5, salinity will reach its highest level during this tidal cycle, before gradually decreasing from April 6 to 10. On the Ham Luong River, salinity is forecast to rise from April 1 to 5, peak on April 5, and then gradually decline from April 6 to 10.

On the Tien River, the 1 g/l salinity boundary is expected to intrude about 38–43 km inland from the river mouth, while the 4 g/l boundary will reach approximately 30–35 km inland. On the Ham Luong River, the 1 g/l salinity boundary is forecast to reach 45–50 km inland, and the 4 g/l boundary about 35–40 km inland from the river mouth.

Specifically, on the Tien River, the highest salinity level during this period is forecast at Xuan Hoa sluice gate (Binh Ninh commune) at 0.5–1.5 g/l, and at Binh Duc ferry terminal (Kim Son commune) below 0.3 g/l.

Saltwater intrusion this week is forecast to remain lower than the multi-year average and lower than the same period in April 2025.
