Dong Thap: Commemorating the 162nd Death Anniversary of National Hero Truong Dinh

(DTO) On the morning of August 20, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism solemnly held a ceremony commemorating the 162nd death anniversary of National Hero Truong Dinh (August 20, 1864 - August 20, 2026) at his temple in Gia Thuan Commune, Dong Thap Province. 

Former central-level leaders attending the ceremony included Nguyen Thi Hoai Thu, former Party Central Committee member, former member of the National Assembly Standing Committee and former Chairwoman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Social Affairs; Huynh Minh Doan, former Party Central Committee member, former Deputy Head of the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region and former Provincial Party Committee Secretary; and Nguyen Huu Chi, former Deputy Minister of Finance, former Deputy Provincial Party Committee Secretary and former Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee.

Provincial leaders attending the ceremony included Phan Van Thang, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Thap Province; Pham Thanh Ngai, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee; members of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Board; former provincial leaders; former members of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Board; representatives of the Council of the Truong Family in the South; leaders of provincial departments, agencies and socio-political organizations; and current and former leaders of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism. 

The ceremony featured a variety of special musical performances. 

In the nation’s struggle against foreign invaders in the latter half of the 19th century, the uprising led by Truong Dinh, or the Great Marshal for the Pacification of the West, rallied large numbers of people to fight, becoming a leading force in the resistance movement in the South. It remains a source of pride for the people of Dong Thap and the nation as a whole in building and defending the homeland.

Speaking about the life and contributions of National Hero Truong Dinh, Vo Van Chien, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that looking back on the early period of the resistance against the French, we can take pride in our long tradition of resisting foreign invaders, exemplified by the Truong Dinh’s uprising. His steadfast fighting spirit and heroic sacrifice have become an enduring symbol of national solidarity and the determination to fight and sacrifice for the survival of the nation, particularly among the people of southern Vietnam.

162 years have passed since National Hero Truong Dinh gave his life, yet the spirit of the uprising he led, one of the earliest leading movements in the resistance against the French in the South and across the country, remains a source of pride for the people of Go Cong and Dong Thap as they build and defend their homeland. 

At the ceremony, the Organizing Committee presented tokens of appreciation and flowers to five organizations and 12 individuals for their contributions to organizing and participating in activities marking the 162nd death anniversary of National Hero Truong Dinh.
