(DTO) The National Election Council on March 31 held a conference to review the elections of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 tenure. The event was held in person and connected online to provincial-and commune-level venues across 34 provinces and cities nationwide.

Attending the conference were Party General Secretary To Lam; State President Luong Cuong; Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh; and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, who also serves as Chairman of the National Election Council.

At the Dong Thap venue , attendees included Mr. Ngo Chi Cuong, member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the 11th Dong Thap Provincial People’s Council.

Overview of the conference at the Dong Thap provincial venue.

According to the National Election Council, this was the largest election ever held, with more than 76 million voters participating at over 72,000 polling stations nationwide. Voter turnout reached a very high rate of 99.7 percent, clearly demonstrating the people’s strong political awareness and deep sense of civic responsibility.

Regarding the number of National Assembly deputies, voters nationwide elected all 500 deputies to the 16th National Assembly from a total of 863 candidates. For the first time, the National Assembly includes a representative of the O Du ethnic group, one of the smallest ethnic minority groups in Vietnam. The proportion of elected female deputies remained high at 30 percent.

As for People’s Council deputies at all levels, at the provincial level, localities elected a total of 2,552 deputies in accordance with the Law. At the commune level, 72,438 deputies were elected nationwide, 160 fewer than the total number prescribed by law, with a reduction of two deputies due to force majeure. These results affirmed that personnel preparations were conducted carefully, democratically, and in accordance with legal regulations, ensuring that elected deputies met standards, were of good quality, and had appropriate representation.

At the conference, Party General Secretary To Lam highlighted five major successes and drew five key lessons learned from the elections. The most notable highlight of this election was the large, responsible and confident participation of voters nationwide; the quality, structure and representativeness of elected deputies continued to improve; preparations were carried out early, methodically, consistently and thoroughly from the central to grassroots levels; there were clear advances in digital transformation and the application of technology in election organization; and political security and social order were maintained throughout the election process.

He stressed that the success of an election is only complete when it is translated into the effective performance of the new term. The voters’ ballots do not end on election day; they must be followed by legislative quality, effective supervision, and sound and timely decisions that meet the country’s development requirements in the new period. Therefore, the responsibility of the 16th National Assembly and each elected deputy is significant: to quickly translate voters’ trust into action, into legislative outcomes, into effective oversight, and into practical decisions that serve the people and national development. This is the fifth lesson and also the most important lesson emphasized by Party General Secretary To Lam.
